The Quicksand of Thinking

The Quicksand of Thinking

This morning, I embarked on a hike with a friend whom I was supposed to meet at 7:30. Realizing I was running late at 7:15 a.m., I quickly messaged her that I would meet her at the trailhead. Upon my arrival, there was no sign of her. By 7:45 a.m., she had not responded to my texts nor appeared. Assuming she might not be coming, I texted her that she seemed to have forgotten today's plan and I proceeded on my walk, sending her my love and a request for confirmation of her well-being.

As I strolled, I noticed a sense of annoyance settling in. Despite my efforts to get there in time, I felt let down. Subsequently, I criticized myself for these feelings, wishing for more patience and empathy. This inner conflict showcased my human nature in full swing.

However, I didn’t get ensnared in the quicksand of my thoughts. Gratefully, I possess a deep understanding of how my mind operates. I acknowledge that my thoughts influence my reality, a realization that I hold dear.

During my walk, I engaged in a mental exercise. I allowed my thoughts to cast me as a victim of my friend's absence, experiencing that perspective firsthand. I then shifted my thoughts to embrace grace and humor. Each alteration in my thinking elicited a distinct emotional response.

After some time, I ceased playing this mental game. Instead, I opened myself to appreciate the beauty surrounding me—the fog veiling the landscape, the dry golden grass, and the rugged terrain my steps traversed. I marveled at the sight of the sun piercing through the fog.

This encounter poignantly reminded me of our thoughts' profound influence over our reality. We can dwell in negative emotions or alter our perspective, finding solace and joy in the present moment. It boils down to recognizing that our thoughts are interpretations rather than concrete truths. By changing our thoughts, we can reshape our emotions and encounters.

I find immense joy in showcasing the potent nature of their minds to others. Witnessing individuals embrace liberation and carve out the life they desire inspires me.

If you seek greater freedom in your life, I invite you to schedule a call with me.
